audio without visuals

nothing like having it as a distant memory in your head.

i remember playing marco’s rent cd in the wee hours of the morning for my client presentation. season’s of love would blast the office to smithereens with my very specatacular singing while i x-acto knifed strips of paper to be later spray mounted on foldcoat.

listening to a compilation of broadway music on cd without the distant memory of a visual is just boring.

even the scene when katie holmes (waaay before tomkat) sang "on my own" in dawson’s creek was enough for me to like listening to les miserables’ "on my own."

maybe i havent really grown the big ears needed to appreciate music that is not familiar. then again, there are some tunes that no matter how often i hear it, just irritates me. i would have to say its a preference thing. this doesnt irritate me, its just bores.

now that im listening to this, i wonder if i will find carmen tedious on cd. maybe i will, maybe i wont. i dunno.

my kuya has issues with watching broadway. to him, broadway is gay– i wouldnt be surprised if that’s entertainment saturday editon made him think so, but now that i ponder on it… there is something off with that much makeup.

i guess i just need to give this cd compilation a bit of a chance. i could learn to appreciate it, im sure… but then again, it could be gay.

hold on. *insert sounds of epiphany* there is such a thing as a bad review.

this cd sucks.

totally magnetic

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

mykel board said that he is a magnet for weird people. i do believe things like these happen, as i have heard dang and taps tell really outrageous out of this world stories which are true.

lately, weird things have been happening to me.

yesterday, as i was out drinking for my very belated birthday celebration, my phone rang. it was noisy and i was of course, inebriated, i picked it up and answered.

"are you the woman who was the promised wife of my cousin from nigeria?"

wtf?! for two minutes, my inebriation left me as i was very weirded out and explained to them that im not the promised wife (hahaha, i certainly remember michaela from carmen!) as i am NOT nigerian, and im nobody’s promised wife! so she asks me where i was from, which was really hard to understand if you imagine the african accent, and i told her i was from korea.

so back to the bar i went and drank one more heinie.

this morning, when i woke up, my roommate told me that the neighbor was knocking their window at 1130pm because she wanted to give them flowers! oh god. of course, this is the freaky 40 year old female downstairs neighbor who needs to get some friends on friendster.

i was thankful that i got home late!

thing is, this neighbor gave me cake a couple of weeks back — the plain yellow cake that has the stickiest sugary ice cream that tastes sooo bad. i had a few bites woke up the next morning to a searing diarrhea stomachache. few days later, i got flowers. peach roses, to be exact.

receiving flowers is an experience that i used to DEMAND for. at the rate this weirdo is going, id rather be left alone.

then there’s the cheapskate weirdo from a couple of posts back.

maybe its a sign that halloween’s just around the corner?

something about him…

i have finally changed the cd in my clock radio cd player.

after two and a half years of playing carole king’s "its loo late" ive changed to something better. i changed it before to sting’s album a few months back, i slept through it and got to work late! so it went back to the "stelly cant drive" compilation cd.

its particularly nice to wake up to crooning, and though it makes me not want to get out of bed (then again, carole king has the same effect. im just a lazy person, as you can see.) it makes me happy. giddy even.

im thinking how long this particular cd will play in my clock radio, but it looks like it wont get changed right away. i love the crooning. it’s like a sweet romantic guy waking me up with a tray of bacon, rice and eggs (and ive had that before, believe me it was great!). i know i wont be having that anytime soon, so i guess this crooner is going to suffice.

i still dont like waking up in the morning, but this sure makes it a little better. hee hee.

david byrne, i love your cover (i think tibor made it, im not sure if its him or stefan), but maybe you will have to wait for a bit.

thank you for reintroducing me. ive been hearing him at home before from my kuya, but i never thought that id go looking for him. thank you!!!

***

today, i celebrated my birthday — long overdue with my coworkers. oh god. too much beer, too much greasy filipino food.

it IS great to be 27 again (even if it means that i only have six months left in it).

thank you for making my tuesday great!

feeding desire

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

there is no spoon.

but there is a lot of them at the cooper-hewitt’s almost finished exhibit about dining implements.

i finally went to this exhibit that ive been longing to see since i heard about it — i was just too stingy to pay for the admission. finally, the cooper-hewitt was free all week last week thanks to target, and i went to check it out.

this exhibit showed a lot of serving implements made since the 1500’s up to the present. they had implements made from silver, pewter, plastic, wood, other materials and my favorite– bakelite. i cant give much detail about it except that it was great to see all of those things — and somehow i cant imagine why some of the spoons were so huge that they wont fit in my mouth, or any other person’s mouth for that matter. maybe they ate soup a lot and just sipped from the tip? i dunno. (part of me was thankful that my ancestors ate with their hands!)

considering that back in the day, humans were smaller in size. still the size of the utensils were very inconceivable to me.

one of my favorite parts of the exhibit is airline dining. in there, they showed the very simple and elegant concorde dining service. they also had shown the difference between the lufthansa first class dining pieces compared to the coach dining pieces. oh what a delight to see these without paying airfare! i guess when i finally take a first class flight, i shall enjoy all the china that they would serve the food in. also, i love the idea that the corner of their linen napkins had a buttonhole so travelers can fasten the napkin to their top button of their shirt. ingenious!

apart from the feeding desire exhibit, there was also "made to scale: staircase masterpieces." this exhibit is a delight to see! it showed a lot of simple and elaborate made to scale staircases. looking at these mini masterpieces of grandeur takes you imagining the great mansion of lemony snicket. me? i was imagining myself as a princess descending from those steps in a nice ballgown — a la princess diaries, but better. hey, mattress surfing never looked so good. hahaha.

i was amazed that these staircases in itself is an architectural structure and that there are people who specialized in the craft of making them. how i wish i paid more attention to the little bits of info instead of the nagging hangover headache i was nursing.

there was another exhibit — which i skipped because i couldnt stand how i smelled so much unwashed hair in one room. (hey, sue me. i like those hispanics who sit beside me in the subway smelling like irish spring! little backflip of happiness!) i would like to say that i was exaggerating, but i just couldnt stand the smell of a hundred old people who didnt wash their hair. could it be because it was a saturday? i dunno.

7.69 plus tip. i guess we should leave her 10 bucks.

so i hand 5 dollars (thank god i had change) and leave it be. after reading anthony bourdain’s kitchen confidential, i try leaving about 20% for tip. 15% is NYC customary, but i guess the extra dollar or two wont hurt, right?

so 2 dollars and change come back, and hello! he picks up the loose change and keeps it for himself. let us remember that our malted milkshake was served to us by a nice 60 year old waitress. 60 friggin years old!

man, i swear to god, this is by far the most audaciously cheap date ive ever had.

its also the shortest amount of time i spent on a date. hahaha.

the boy genius also had the audacity to say "oh lets head back to my place because i so wanna make out with you!"

do you look like gael garcia bernal?! hell fucking no.

when we said goodbye, he said "should we see each other again, or no?"

to this i replied the alicia silverstone classic.

WHATEVER!

ordinary thursday

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

no thank you, im married.

with a big smirksmile on my face, i entered the elevator on the 6th floor going down. it stops on the 4th floor and this lady enters. "oh, arent you cute? all smiles and jolly."

"what are you so happy about?"

jovially i replied, "a (sleazy) married man just asked me out." she was appalled, and said, "oh that’s gross!" i told her, nah. i actually liked it– though i told him i was married just to shrug him off. still shaken with disbelief, i explained to her that i was happy to have my ego blown to the size of texas. let’s have a tequila party out of my lemons, shall we?

i love new yorkers for being too direct. they do give me my random backflips of happiness (include the heavenlysmellofsoapandwater that i always smell in the subway!).

after work, while musing about whether to look for people to go happy hour drinking with, i ducked into the library. borrowed books, a movie and 2 cd’s. i was really giddy about my loot, so i walked along 53rd street towards the 6 train on lexington ave.

in the corner of park and 53rd, i ran into someone who i least expected to run into. partly shocked, i walked away. damn, i should have said hello! i looked majorly hot today! (i should have pestered about my friend to hook me up with the coworker ive been crushing on… hmmm)

i remember what jeff texted me the other day — thank you for sending me the pictures. WE LOOK HOT! (jeff, i will give you cooking lessons to woo all your lovers in isetann!)

i love this thursday. thank you, tony bennett, for singing about me that way.

Black is the New Pink

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

pink purse, check. yellow sneakers, check. dark turquoise jacket, check.

for the past two or three weeks, ive been shopping at my three favorite clothing stores — gap, h&m and old navy.

mostly, ive been buying black, white and gray things because ive need layering pieces. few days before laundry day, i sometimes end up looking like rainbow brite. so now, i am trying to overshadow ALL THINGS PINK in my closets.

salmon, light pink, fuschia, old rose.. sheesh. i probably have half of the pink palette of the pantone swatchbook in my closet. it’s blindingly pink!

so i was at this wall of socks at the gap. there was navy argyle and fuschia argyle.

i was torn. i was thinking of purchasing fuschia argyle.

but i purchased navy. 2 pairs of the navy.  hah! it was a tough decision to make. laugh if you must.

i think im transforming into the sophisticated new yorker. i seriously think that it will take some serious time until i wear stilettos.
