horizontal adventures and astrud

Monday, May 28th, 2007

maybe about some hours ago, coming from jen and manny’s adios 207 party, i was lying down in the back of steve’s pickup truck with glen and mirell, among a bunch of hardware supplies - cans of paint, specifically. it was a (threesome) party that steve hated because:

1. he wasnt invited (its a threesome, steve! not a foursome)
2. he was driving and we were a bunch of boozed up brats; lying down because there was no seating space in his pickup - but he didnt even realize that he was also part of a foursome with raina, mike and vandanna.

its an odd adventure of sorts. we were in it because:

1. the ride was free.
2. riding like baggage is fun - while totally risking getting a ticket. (or as steve put it, it was like human trafficking)
3. riding the subway from park slope to billyburg is a pain in the ass at three in the morning.

the ride from park slope to billyburg was confusing, at best. at the rate that my head was on glen’s stomach for the duration of the ride - im glad he could hold alcohol. thank god he didnt spew out bile and other unmentionables on my hair! (note to self: dont ever do this horizontal ride with an alcohol infused individual. washing off that puke smell from hair is just horrible.)

destination billyburg reached. so the three of us get out of the horizontal and asked to use the bathroom at glen’s. wheee. its fun to pee. of course, i puttered around his apartment.

i have the voyeuristic tendencies down pat - from looking into other people’s purses and poking around their apartments, and i must say, clawing through his books and records is fun!

the better fun of it all is listening to astrud gilberto’s records on a record-changer thingy circa 1960’s? whoa. digital music is fun - but i finally understand why my brother spends so much money on records. it is great great fun to listen to them.

id like to do the vinyl route - but im too cheap to do so.

aaaah. the adventures of a single girl.

i should stop interviewing myself…

multiply shopping

Monday, May 21st, 2007

now that my friendster account has some 200 friends (and at some point
i have schmoozed with all of them) my multiply and myspace accounts are
getting bratty.

among these three hubric sites, i think multiply is a lot more easier
to update and navigate. the bad side is that, i had to get on with a
gmail account and reactivate my old blogger account and get everything
seamlessly integrated along with my flickr account. ARGH. too much work
for me - but what the hell, i guess it is a bit worth it. after all, it
feeds my middle child syndrome to great proportions.

i have been friends shopping on everyones multiply friends (dont worry,
i’ll get on to myspace next time) and it is once again, leeann’s fault
why i have multiply. i still love it for the fact that i dont have to
reduce the file size of the pictures to accomodate friendster’s stingy
picture hosting.

i was thinking about cancelling my friendster account - but everyone
who is worth gossiping and kvetching about is in there, so im keeping
it. hahahaha. let me try updating the friendster blog and the multiply
blog by cut and pasting.

now i wonder if i could redirect my friendster blog to the blogger blog? is that possible???

modern day hubris

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

friendster,
myspace, multiply, tagged and whatnot. i finally give in to leeann’s
pushes of joining her online community of friends in myspace and
multiply. i know updating my friendster blog is a drag in itself, but
why add all of this? well…

first off, i love the fact that
multiply and blogger and flickr are all linked together. no more
dealing with emailing where last nights party pictures are (trust me,
they are still in my camera!) so i get to update in the other sites and
the linked ones just update by themselves. life is sweet.

myspace,
i joined because i have this ulterior motive to learn html and java and
css and whathaveyous and use it to feed my ego and ergo show the world
that i am an interesting person. but whatever. my motives of signing up
for these things are just a way to pass up boredom and get more gossip.
after all, i am still trying to be friends with myself.

im still
trying to think if myspace links with blogger. i hope it does. so all i
have left to deal with would be cut and pasting this entry to my
friendster blog.

oh yeah, i like the way this one looks. its nice and green and circley.

i promise to write better, and indulge ONLY my friendster blog with the surveys. this will remain pristine.

brattification of you

Saturday, May 19th, 2007

i got this off jon from the bulletin board posting he made. i am without husband and offspring but i do believe what it has to say.

as my kuya always said "i dont want to be rich - to be rich is boring." i am hoping that this rubs off on all the overprotective parents. i do hope you make your kids suffer enough to be streetsmart. its nice to provide, but i think its greater to make them able to fend for themselves with less resource. after all, it isnt always that parents are there to help.

make them take public transport. make them resourceful. make them tough. there’s nothing more comforting than knowing that you taught them well enough to survive on their own.

>
>"This is why we insisted that you do
your bed in the morning, and to
>pick up your own toys and cloths,
rather than have a yaya trailing you.
>
>"And I could go on and on. As you are
apt to say, ‘You catch my drift!’
>
>"When you feel you are not getting
enough money in your allowance, or
>get new shoes like your friends
always had or the latest fad of Guess
>jeans, take this letter out and
reread what I have written.
>
>"We love you far too much to create a
brat!
>
>"Your Loving Father"

in my opinion, it is a lot better to teach your kids self confidence and self worth, rather than slathering them with expensive clothes and top of the line cars.

tis my opinion, and my blog. how you raise your kid is your problem. NYAHAHAHAHA.

happy hour afterhour

it is ironic how i end up in romantic settings with the wrong context.

ive been to dumbo a couple of times (that’s the brooklyn neighborhood Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), and the times ive been there has always been pleasant.

but never in my entire life of musing about silly things did i imagine sharing a sunset with someone so unexpected and talking about our his and my (separate) plans for the future. at some point in this whole sunset experience, i remember the day when brandie and i were musing about earning the big bucks after graduation to afford our apartment and sustain our lifestyle. no, this wasnt with a boyfriend, and yet i was with a boy.

ive had my fair share of sunsets, sunrises and full moons - all of them great and grand. yet nothing as soothing and unexpected as this.

it is strange to find something so beautiful in moments of sheer cliche (come on, sunset on manhattan with the water in front of you between the brooklyn bridge and the manhattan bridge) - and yet i realize that coming from a very patriarchal and macho society; hearing, feeling and actually fearing about life in general from a guy is the exact opposite of weak and girly.

and with this sunset, i again revise my tall order.

i told you, girls. go date ernest.

translated from tagalog - to the graduating students of college of arts and letters batch 2007

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Delivered before graduating students of the University of the
Philippines College of Arts and Letters, 21 April 2007, at the UP
Hardin ng mga Diwata, Diliman, Quezon City

Kapuwa kong Pambansang Alagad ng Sining at Dekano Virgilio Almario,
Kawaksing Dekano Marilyn Canta, Kawaksing Dekano Jose Wendell Capili,

To my fellow artists (?!), dean virgilio almario, assistant dean jose wendell capili, assistant dean regina gochico, college secretary teodoro maraman, faculty, parents, guests and graduating students, good afternoon.

Anong ginagawa ng estudyante sa eskwelahan? Pupunta ng klase. Tapos?
Pupunta sa susunod na klase. Tapos? Magtatanghalian. Tapos? Pupunta
ulit sa isa pang klase. Tapos? Pupunta sa huling klase. Tapos? Tapos,
araw ng pagtatapos.

what does a student do in school? go to class. then? go to the next class. then? lunch. then? head to yet another class. Then? go to the last class. then? its done. graduation day.

Graduation. Araw ng pagtatapos. Sino ba ang nagtatapos? Kayo. Ano ba
mag-unahang mag-enrol ulit.

Graduation. Graduation day. who graduates? you. what gets finished? you, also. your days of being carefree and happy go lucky are now gone. this day should be a party, and whatever happens, whatever i say, nothing will make you feel otherwise. so i prepared a list - ten reasons why it is a pain in the ass to graduate. after my speech, let’s see if you wont scramble to go back to school again.

first reason, when you graduate, your allowance is cut off. such nerve it is of you to ask money from your parents. back then, you could pocket some of the extra money from the bloated tuition fee that you asked for, for example. when you graduate, you pay for the electric bill, the water bill, the rent. if you have a younger sibling, it will now be your turn to pay for his matriculation. chances are, they will be asking an allowance from you.

kaibigan. Sa kolehiyo, bawat sem may bago kang nakikilala kasi may bago
kang kaklase.
work.

second reason, when you graduate, your friends will be
gone. Oh, maybe that’s too much. But let us admit it, the chances of you
getting together with your friends will become less. It’s practically weird
that all of you will join the same company.

Ikalawang dahilan, pag
iisang kompanya kayo lahat pumasok? Liliit na rin ang oportunidad na makakilala
ka ng bagong kaibigan. Sa kolehiyo, bawat sem may bago kang nakikilala kasi may
bago kang kaklase.
group mate. Ang trabaho, para s’yang isang napakahabang group work.

The opportunity of meeting new
friends will also get smaller. In college, you meet new people every semester
because you have new classmates. This process becomes slower in a permanent
job. Think of it this way, back then the most annoying thing is to have a
good-for-nothing groupmate. Working is just like a very long (and tedious)
group work.

Ikatlong dahilan kung bakit
bad trip magtapos, wala nang panahong magbasa. Kayong mga taga-College of Arts
and Letters, may bentahe kayo. Masarap mag-aral ng arte at letra. Isipin n’yo

The third reason why its
annoying to graduate, you have no time to read for leisure. All of you from the college of
arts and letters, you have an advantage. It is fun to study arts and letters.
Think about the people from the college of engineering, do you think they enjoy
studyuing? There is pleasure in reading poems, analyzing pictures/paintings,
learning how to say “good morning” in german, performing in theater and
delivering speeches. When you graduate and start working, your brain will
always be tired when you get home. Watching television is the only (brain?)
rest you will get.

Ikaapat na dahilan, wala nang bakasyon pag
tag-init. At mas maikling bakasyon sa Pasko. Kawawa naman kayo.

The fourth reason is, no more summer
vacations. And shorter christmas breaks. Poor you.

Fifth reason – no more free events. If you
just walk around the campus, you will find free events. For example, the up
fair; you can just sit on the benches at sunken garden and you would hear the
bands play. But when you graduate, where will you go? Are you gonna camp
outside the araneta center? (araneta center is a huge concert venue, just like
madison square garden)

Sixth reason – you can no longer be absent
six times (per semester). You will no longer have academic freedom because you
are not in school anymore. When you graduate and start working and don’t go to
work more than three times, let’s just see where you will end up.

Pag
buwan.

In conncetion to the sixth reason, when you
graduate, you can no longer drop (classes). When you are a student and you got
a power-tripping professor, you can drop the class and the problem is solved.
If the academic load is too much for you to handle, you can drop. Just take the
same subject next semester. You cant do that in the real world. You cant drop
your job and apply for it a few months later.

Ikawalong dahilan kung bakit bad trip
magtapos.

The eighth reason why it’s a pain in the
ass to graduate is that you can no loger send text messages in class. When you
are bored at work, you cant do anything else but be bored working. In class,
you send text messages so you can meet up with your friends after. Didn’t I say
that after you graduate, your friends will be gone?

Ikasiyam na dahilan, hindi na p’wedeng
mangopya.
exam. O, araw-araw exam.

The ninth reason is, you cant copy anymore.
You cant make photocopies of your classmate’s notebook. You cant peek at your
friend’s answers during exams. Because, there are no more exams. Or, everyday
is an exam.

pagbabasa, bakasyon, libreng gimik, pag-aabsent, pagda-drop, pagtetext,
pangongopya. Tapos ka na e. Tapos na. Oras na para magsimula.

When you graduate, you are also done. This
is the tenth reason why its is annoying to graduate: you cant go back. You
cannot go back. Gone are the days of an allowance, hanging out with
your friends, reading to your heart’s content, extended vacations, free events, slacking off, dropping, texting and copying. Because you are finished. Your happy days are done and
over with. It is now time to start anew.

i hope i have not lost anything in translation.

because i am bored…
